The Semi-Permanent Properties of BR Shield
One of Big Red’s most significant assets being deployed in the fight against the COVID-19 virus is BR Shield which is a self-disinfecting coating that inactivates viruses, kills bacteria and will keep on working for an extended period of time. The reason that BR Shield can remain active and effective for a long period of time is due to its chemical composition.
The vast majority of traditional disinfectants remain chemically ‘Unbound’ from the surfaces on which they are applied. Unbound disinfectants are intended to act quickly and then, dissipate just as quickly to minimize the danger to humans and treated objects. Many, including those used routinely to clean hard non-porous surfaces such as taps, doorknobs, light switches are simply wiped away after a brief contact time or just left to evaporate. The microbes on the surfaces are killed upon contact. However, once the antimicrobial has dried, is depleted or has been washed away during regular maintenance; the protection vanishes. This is why high touch surfaces must be cleaned so regularly as these chemicals have no long-lasting effect. This is not an unintended deficiency; rather, it is what they are designed to do.
Non-Leaching Antimicrobial
By contrast to unbound chemical disinfectants, a bound disinfection agent such as BR Shield remains chemically bonded at the molecular level to the surface onto which originally applied. This chemical bonding may last for a period of weeks, months or even years. On a doorknob, for example, antimicrobial protection is extended long past the initial application and drying period and will continue to destroy microbes on contact until the surface is either covered with dirt or worn away by abrasion.
Coating Lasts for more than 5 Years
These pictures clearly show that BR Shield will inhibit the growth of microorganisms on treated surface. The use of harsh or toxic chemicals is not required as microbial pollutants are kept in control to a level where normal water or cleaning detergent will suffice. If there is no abrasion at all on the coating the treatment may outlive the life of the surface.
Big Red offers a 180-day money back guarantee for the ongoing efficacy of BR Shield. However, on most high-touch surfaces with typical regular cleaning and abrasion, the antimicrobial activity will actually remain effective for up to one year. On surfaces not routinely abraded, such as walls, the protection will be almost indefinite, and its ongoing disinfection efficacy will be measured in years.
For the technically minded: BR Shield is based on reactive organo-silane chemistry that provides a semi-permanent antiviral and antimicrobial coating to any surface it is applied to. This eliminates the risk of cross contamination and the subsequent spread of pathogenic organisms from one person to another. The active ingredient in BR Shield is classified as a quaternary ammonium compound and this compound group is recommended by both the US CDC and US EPA to be effective against Coronaviruses.
